Green blocks on flash video
Flash video performance on my PowerBook G4 was really bad over the past few months. Maybe because my hard disk is always almost full.. Or maybe because I really need to do a clean install of OS X after years of upgrades..

Anyway, I was delighted to read today that a Flash 10 beta was out for the Mac. I downloaded it and installed it. I tried to watch videos both on ikbis.com and Youtube and I got the horrible result above. Huge green pixels/blocks and totally distorted video!

On dailymotion.com, the green blocks where not there but the video was jittery to such a degree it was unwatchable. On Vimeo I also had a problem with their “HD” quality playback. Even when HD was off, the video was jittery.

I am writing this post hoping it gets noticed by others who have the same problem.

Same here. Most flash videos give me that green pixelated look. However, some, such as this latest Pixar short (http://videolog.uol.com.br/video.php?id=343906), do work. And performance has significantly improved for these few videos that work.

Same here on a G4 iBook… I wonder if they test these builds at all if it doesn’t even work for youtube :-(

I have the same issue on my G5 with a GeForce FX 5200.

I hope the issues can be ironed out, they seem to be happening on computers with older video cards.

Thanks everyone for confirming the problem. I posted on Adobe’s forums a few days ago but received no reply from users or adobe. http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?forumid=72&catid=675&threadid=1375649&enterthread=y

I also sent a report about the problem to Adobe’s support.

I downgraded to Flash 9 after removing the plugin file (Flash Player.plugin) from HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins

Flash 9 performance is horrible on my G4 Powerbook. Choppy Flash video is very common. I find it mind boggling that Adobe didn’t test the Flash 10 Beta on YouTube.

Hmm, after looking at the comments here and thinking about my own experience, it appears that there are serious bugs with the PPC code. I haven’t tried it on my Intel Mac yet but it appears that the same problems don’t exist on other Intel Macs from what I’ve seen so far.

Just a heads up that the latest version of Flash 10 beta 2 (10.0.0.536) is available and fixes these green block problems for me on a PB G4 1.67GHz. Check what version you have here: http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/

Download the new version here: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html

I just installed it over the old version; it was only 44KB and installed in a few seconds.

THIS IS HOW TO FIX THIS:

    1. Right click on the video
    2. go to settings
    3. go to the left-most tab called Display
    4. UNCHECK Enable hardware acceleration
This will disable hardware acceleration, which has a bug in the new version of Flash 10 and 10.1
    5. Complain to Adobe, so they might hurry up and fix their flash errors
