Nokia's 5800 XpressMusic Tube

The mobile world is in full anticipation waiting for the October 2nd unveiling of the what many believe is Nokia’s first answer to the iPhone. This phone is code named “Tube” and will carry the model name of XpressMusic (or XpressMedia) 5800 (I really can’t stand these model names btw).

This is a smartphone running Symbian S60. It is rumored to have a 3.2 MP camera, a front camera, WiFi, GPS, 3G. The main keyword here is: touch screen. (more rumored spec can be found here).

Now, as far as I am concerned, the key thing is if the “touch” version of this phone’s Symbian OS is any improvement over what I have on my N95. When the iPhone interface came out it absolutely put Nokia’s interface design (from the perspectives of usability, speed, visual appeal and fun) to shame. I am so curious to see if Nokia are able to pull S60 from the 90’s and bring it to the 21st century.

With this phone coming out and with Google’s Android based G1 hitting US stores later in October, there will be an exciting ride ahead of us. I will be eagerly watching the web on October 2nd.

Another phone that recently caught my eye is the Samsung Pixon (which also has a mandatory lame model number of M8800). It’s main feature in an 8MP camera with autofocus. It also has the Samsung touch interface, GPS and and an accelerometer (but no WiFi). From what I read so far, its web browser seems to be of inferior quality.

I had the chance recently to play around with the Samsung TouchWiz (the so-called F480) and I have to say I wasn’t too impressed with that phone.
Then, there is the lame marketing video of the Pixon..

Cheesiness taken to new extremes.

On October 2nd, this phone’s official marketing site will be unveiled at (prepare for it!):

The Nokia touch looks so cool, I would have faith in it more than the 3G iPhone
