This article (“How Israel brought Gaza to the brink of humanitarian catastrophe“) has been making the rounds on the net over the past few days. Avi Shlaim is an Oxford professor of international relations who served in the Israeli army and has never questioned the Israel’s legitimacy. But the Israel’s merciless assault on Gaza, and its decade-long policy of bating Gaza into submission, has led Shlaim to “devastating conclusions”: Israel is a rouge state.
“This brief review of Israel’s record over the past four decades makes it difficult to resist the conclusion that it has become a rogue state with “an utterly unscrupulous set of leaders”. A rogue state habitually violates international law, possesses weapons of mass destruction and practises terrorism – the use of violence against civilians for political purposes. Israel fulfils all of these three criteria; the cap fits and it must wear it. Israel’s real aim is not peaceful coexistence with its Palestinian neighbours but military domination.”
This is good reading for anyone who only has only been hearing one side of the story. And this is not Arab propaganda. It is analysis by a prominent Israeli scholar.
