The persistent news (or shall I say rumor) in the office for the past few days has been about hundreds of layoffs in a major Jordanian bank. What on earth is going on?? I have not seen such news reported in the papers. Tonight I checked the blogs and Ammoun News and found nothing. Nothing on Google News. There is nothing but good news from Jordan’s banks.

I feel confused. Is this just a stupid rumor?

I can confirm that it is not a rumour, especially on a managerial level.

There is an article to confirm the general rumor by Fahed Al Fanek without specifying which banks are laying off employees:

I for one think its NOT a rumor at all. Real people are reporting such layoffs. And its bugger that these banks (publicly traded) are not issuing any public statements explaining their decisions. Where are the reporters of Jordan?

having been blogging as of late but i have a draft on that …. and mentioned it in another.
and its hardly limited to banking, telecom is adopting the same plan. they are offering salary advances to anyone managerial if they hand in their resignation … so that it wouldn’t be technically called a lay off.
Banks that have ties with khalijee countries and international ones are doing that (think french and english)

at least our IT sector is suffering. major IT companies which I am involved in is laying off workers or freezing hiring process altogather. Available positions are only senior positions, and usually filled by the help of a head hunter (instead of announcing vacancies on conventional online sites or through classifieds. I guess they’re trying to keep low profiles)

My company, which is notoriously known for penalizing workers who leave earlier than the maturity date of the employment contract, has even stopped the penalty clause altogether, so anyone who is thinking of leaving, would do so without any hassle!
