Osman Akuz's imagenets.com

Osman Akuz is one of Jordan’s most renowned photographers. Over the decades he amassed an absolutely HUGE collection of photos from Jordan and the Middle East covering a wide spectrum from artistic to industrial photography.

When we, people in the design, advertising and media business think of Osman we realize that he’s a figure who’s been creatively active during a time before our whole ‘industry’ existed.. Even before many of us were born!!

Yet he’s such a friendly and humble man. It’s always great to meet him or talk to him over the phone when you need that special picture. It’s always reassuring to hear his Turkish accented English mixed with Arabic expressions: most notably the word “Wallahi”..

I’ve been in contact with Osman for over a decade now and he’s helped us out at SYNTAX many many times. So when it came to helping him start his new web venture we jumped on the opportunity.

The result is our design and development work for Imagenets.com, Osman’s online stock photo library.

Osman has ambitious plans for ImageNets. Eventually the site should hold 50,000 photos. There already were over 1000 photos online last time I talked to Osman.

Needles to say the site, which is based on a robust PHP/MySQL solution, is keyword searchable and includes a shopping cart to order images, Osman is offering a free download of a featured image each month.

Check it out.

Thanks Osman for this opportunity to work with you on this and thanks to Salua, Reef and Khalid from SYNTAX for their work on the site.

    very nice work!
i have always thought of somthing like this, a web site for arabic stock images…
coz as a designer i always face difficulties finding a good arabic photo in images stocks …

i loved the idea and the design is very nice and elegant.
but i would love to see saudi pepole in the photos and emarati also, coz i guess they are the most wanted photos in ME

I like the idea too and think that more Arab photographers should go down the same road providing better and more professional photos of the Arab region.

I really like the design too, but what else can I expect from Syntax but great designs :)

Very nice thank you for sharing, I have checked out the site, the collection seems to be limited for now. I hope one day they will be half as good as (gettyimages.com) or (corbis.com), and I think they are a bit overpriced for style of photos they have.

It was really great to find Osman here on the web. And your description of him touched me. I’ve met Osman for the first time somewhere in 1981 right before the Jerash festival. Back then he was already very active with his camera. I remember many slideshows in his house, which he assembled on-the-fly and that he accompanied with the most beautiful stories. He had an amazing number of slides, all of them of great beauty. And yes, the “Wallahi” was already to be heared in those days. Are you, or Osman thinking of digitizing the ‘old’ slides too?

Looking at his picture above, I noticed he didn’t get older, well not much anyway. He is still the Osman I remember.

If you see him, or if he reads this stuff too, please send him my regards.

PS. Great that it works with Firefox.
