Frayed Ends

Every now and then, someone in Jordan comes out with a creative breakthrough that takes us all by surprise.

Frayed Ends is such a moment. It’s a five minute animated short movie (I would rate it R by the way) that represents a voyeuristic view into the life of an extremely depressed young man.

Frayed Ends is the first 3D short movie to be conceived in Jordan. It was the brainchild of eight people who wanted to do something different and challenging. It shows the darker side of animation, it conveys an abstract message that can touch people in a unique way.

It is a no budget film. The whole work from the story writing to final compositing and sound editing took three and a half months to finish. And it was completely locally made. Cutting edge techniques were used in the creation, and new tools and techniques were innovated as well.

Frayed Ends is a story about a typical young man, whose depression has pushed him to the edge, he represents the darker side of the new generation’s thinking, and it shows the psyche of a guy who’s still trying to accept what fate has brought him.

This movie shows two things: That talent exists in Jordan (albeit in isolated little islands) and that effects of the democratization of the tools of digital media production are starting to take root. These young filmmakers are saying it: No Budget. This is no joke. We were all amazed when, a little over a decade ago, Pixar came out with Toy Story, the first feature length feature film, which besides creativity and a good story, required a huge multi million rendering farm to be produced.

Fast forward to 2007 and you have a bunch of young Jordanians with no budget, but with an idea, skill and the will to do something with ordinary PCs, producing a five minute short, that is nothing short of professional. Give those people a budget and let them hire some help and you could have a future Pixar in Jordan.

[Thanks for the tip Ibrahim]
