The telecom session of the first day of the ICT forum, was quite lively. All the players, with the notable exception of Xpress (which was nowhere to be scene at this Forum) were sitting there, debating everything for license fees, the new Jordanian WiMax license which is being tendered, the amazing growth of mobile penetration.

In response to an audience question about when JT plans to introduce higher DSL speeds (2 Mbit was only recently introduced) the Chief Strategy Officer of JT said that “if you can show me that there is demand for higher access speeds, we’d be happy to provide them”.

I really hope that other telecoms finally start to get their own international bandwidth and that we get over this issue.

I mean, come on, my company would gladly buy 4 Mbit access. We’re still stuck with a 512 Kbps connection. When calling our ISP asking them if we could PAY MORE, and get a faster connection with a bigger download quota than the puny 8 or 10 GB/month limit, the typical answer from the ISP is “no sir, we don’t have the option”.

I say: demand for such services comes from the market, but should also be created. When, for example, will we see a major Arab telecom strike a deal with a movie distributer for a digital movie download service that runs on a 4 Mbit connection. I bet something like this would create demand for bigger broadband pipes.

    Demand? In Jordan?

Sure you won’t get much demand when your residential 4mb line will be costing 876 JD/year (inclusive, 600JD/year+tax+ JTC fees).

Lower fees! Make high speed internet available at every home! I mean maybe they start seeing something else other than Melody, Iqra, stupid forums, another suggestions would be blocking all Sau.di sites (yes those forums that people here love who usually got posts like: A guy didn’t listen to his father, so God turned him into a donkey, photos inside (they post a photo of a donkey, and poeple reply: Sub7aaaan Allaaaah!

I agree 100%. Avid supply creates the necessary demand, period. If it isn’t available, how on earth will people ask for it. That offical reply of ” show me the demand for it” is a lame reply.

Hala Ahmad, Why can’t you get multiple 512 lines and poll them together? should be technically non-challenging. this arrangement is more fault tolerant and may possibly result in better speeds since load can be distributed better.

I don’t think there is infrastructure to even support these high speed lines, I have a 8mb orange connection and i pay about 500 a year, they gave me unlimited bandwidth which isn’t really unlimited (its around 54gb thats what they call unlimited!), the speed never goes above 3mb BUT you can use four computers and the speed for each will be around 2mb..
